According to the World Socialist Web Site, a massive fire engulfed the “Diehl Metall” factory in Berlin, Germany, on May 3, 2024, causing significant damage and environmental concerns. The factory, owned by the Diehl Group, produces metal products and is a major supplier for the German military and the defense industry, including components for IRIS-T air defense systems used in Ukraine. The fire released toxic fumes and chemicals, leading authorities to issue warnings for residents to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid consuming locally grown produce. Concerns centered around the potential release of copper cyanide and perfluorinated chemicals, posing risks to air and water quality. The article highlights the strategic importance of the Diehl Metall factory to Germany’s military-industrial complex and its role in supporting the war in Ukraine. It suggests the incident reveals the dangers inherent in the escalation of military production and the prioritization of war over safety and environmental protection. Furthermore, it criticizes the lack of transparency and the potential cover-up of the true extent of the environmental damage caused by the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/15/dkai-m15.html
