Twenty-five students in California initiated a hunger strike on May 5th to protest the mass starvation and what they consider to be a genocide occurring in Gaza. The students, representing various universities including UC Berkeley and UCLA, are demanding their respective institutions divest from companies profiting from the Israeli government's actions and to publicly condemn Israel's military campaign. The strike intends to pressure university administrations to acknowledge and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Participants argue that their institutions are complicit in the violence through investments in weapons manufacturers and other companies supporting the Israeli military. They aim to disrupt normal university operations and garner attention to their cause, hoping to inspire broader action within the academic community and beyond. The hunger strike represents an escalation in the ongoing protests and demonstrations taking place on college campuses across the United States regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The strikers view their action as a moral imperative to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and to hold their universities accountable for their financial and political connections to the conflict. The students have vowed to continue the hunger strike until their demands are met. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/12/zbwd-m12.html
