Since Friday, the Trump administration has dramatically escalated its assertion of unchecked presidential power, exceeding previous limits. This began with Trump declaring a national emergency to circumvent congressional refusal to fund his border wall, effectively seizing legislative power. This action, based on a dubious justification of a national security crisis, sets a precedent for future presidents to bypass Congress on any issue. Following this, Trump vetoed a congressional resolution overturning his emergency declaration, further solidifying his control. Secretary of State Pompeo then announced the State Department would no longer automatically grant visas to same-sex domestic partners of foreign diplomats and UN employees, reversing a policy in place since 2009. This targeted action against LGBTQ+ rights exemplifies the administration's broader assault on democratic principles. These actions, coupled with Attorney General Barr's summary of the Mueller report, which critics argue misrepresented its findings to exonerate Trump, demonstrate a concerted effort to consolidate power within the executive branch. The article argues that these actions represent a fundamental challenge to the separation of powers and democratic norms in the United States, laying the groundwork for a potential authoritarian regime. The response from the Democratic Party is characterized as weak and insufficient to counter this growing threat. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/03/18/weby-m18.html
