In Detroit, the city government, controlled by the Democratic Party, is deliberately downplaying the severity of the homelessness crisis. Despite mounting evidence of increasing numbers of unsheltered individuals, the city's official figures present a distorted and unrealistically low count. This misrepresentation aims to minimize the problem and justify inadequate funding and support for homeless services. The article argues that the Democrats' strategy is to hide the truth about homelessness and prioritize corporate interests over the needs of the population. They claim the city and state are funneling money into real estate and development projects in the downtown corridor instead of addressing the social crisis gripping the rest of Detroit. The problem is further exacerbated by insufficient resources for existing shelters and services. Many individuals, struggling with mental health issues, addiction, and poverty, find themselves without proper support. This is compounded by the economic devastation inflicted by decades of deindustrialization and capitalist exploitation in Detroit. The author condemns the complicity of the trade unions and pseudo-left organizations, who enable the Democrats' policies and suppress independent working-class action. They call for a unified struggle against the capitalist system, advocating for independent political organization and demanding that the working class demand that city hall provide a full report on the scale and depth of the homelessness crisis in the city of Detroit and across the country. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/03/05/dbnl-m05.html
