Thai authorities seized over 200 live pangolins, also known as scaly anteaters, from a vehicle in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The seizure occurred after police, acting on a tip, stopped a pickup truck carrying the endangered animals. The pangolins were found crammed into sacks and concealed under vegetables in the truck bed. Pangolins are the world's most trafficked mammal and are heavily poached for their scales and meat, which are highly valued in traditional medicine and as a delicacy, particularly in China and Vietnam. All eight pangolin species are threatened with extinction. The drivers of the truck were arrested and are facing charges related to wildlife trafficking. The authorities believe the pangolins were likely destined for the illegal wildlife trade, possibly to be smuggled out of Thailand to neighboring countries. The seized pangolins are being assessed for their health and will be cared for by wildlife officials. The investigation is ongoing to determine the origin and destination of the animals, and to identify others involved in the smuggling operation. The incident highlights Thailand's continued struggle with wildlife trafficking despite efforts to combat the illegal trade. find the original article here: https://www.yahoo.com/news/thai-officials-seize-over-200-112527815.html
