A recent article exposes a deeply disturbing situation within New Jersey's Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC). Multiple youth correctional officers at the Juvenile Medium Security Facility (JMSF) are accused of organizing and profiting from “gladiator fights” between incarcerated youth. The article details allegations of officers pitting youth against each other for entertainment, often involving promises of extra food or other favors. The situation came to light through lawsuits filed by former inmates, supported by accounts from other inmates, and substantiated by investigations involving text messages and eyewitness testimonies. These fights allegedly occurred regularly, facilitated by the officers who acted as promoters and beneficiaries. Beyond the immediate physical harm inflicted on the youth, the article emphasizes the systemic nature of the problem. It points to a culture of neglect and abuse within the JJC, attributing the occurrences to chronic understaffing, poor training, and a lack of accountability. This systemic failure creates an environment where such behavior can flourish, further traumatizing vulnerable youth already struggling with complex issues. The officers' actions are portrayed as symptomatic of a dehumanizing perspective that views inmates as objects of entertainment rather than individuals deserving of rehabilitation. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/03/06/njdu-m06.html
