Following a devastating train crash in Tempi, Greece, in February 2023, which resulted in 57 fatalities, primarily students, widespread anger and protests erupted across the country. The tragedy exposed systemic negligence and privatization within the Greek railway system, prompting accusations of government corruption and incompetence. The accident has become a symbol of broader social and political grievances in Greece. The government, led by New Democracy and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, faced intense scrutiny. Protesters demanded accountability and justice for the victims. The government's attempts to deflect blame and downplay the role of privatization were met with skepticism and further fueled public outrage. Numerous strikes and demonstrations, including a general strike on Wednesday, took place, with workers and youth demanding justice for Tempi and protesting the government's handling of the disaster. Homemade placards reflected the deep-seated anger and grief felt by many. The Tempi train crash served as a catalyst for expressing broader dissatisfaction with the government's policies and perceived indifference to public safety. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/04/09/tppb-a09.html
