Justice Delayed: Virginia Commutation Controversy

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has ignited controversy by commuting the sentence of former police officer, Joe Gutierrez, who was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the 2021 killing of 32-year-old Bijan Ghaisar. Ghaisar, an unarmed accountant, was shot multiple times after a low-speed chase on the George Washington Memorial Parkway following a reported shoplifting incident involving a pair of sunglasses. The incident sparked outrage and protests due to the excessive force used by law enforcement. Gutierrez was initially sentenced to 12.5 years in prison. Youngkin's decision to commute the sentence effectively releases Gutierrez from incarceration, although he will remain under supervised probation.
