The article analyzes the upcoming South African elections, focusing on the economic and social crisis gripping the country and its impact on the working class. It argues that whichever party wins, the next government will face immense pressure to suppress burgeoning working-class struggles driven by rising unemployment, inequality, and poverty. The article details the failures of the African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party since the end of apartheid, to address these fundamental issues. It highlights the ANC's embrace of neoliberal policies, leading to privatization, deregulation, and a decline in living standards for the majority. This has fueled social unrest and a loss of faith in the ANC. Furthermore, the piece examines the roles of other political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), arguing that they offer no genuine solutions to the crisis facing the working class. It claims that the DA represents the interests of big business and that the EFF, despite its populist rhetoric, ultimately defends the capitalist system. The central thesis is that the elections are a distraction from the underlying class struggle. The article emphasizes the need for the independent organization of the working class, based on a socialist program, to challenge the capitalist system and address the fundamental economic and social inequalities that plague South Africa. It sees the elections as a trap designed to legitimize continued exploitation. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/05/rhsy-m05.html
