Following recent Australian elections, the Labor government has been re-elected. While maintaining key figures from the previous administration, the reshuffling of the ministry suggests a potential shift further to the right politically. Notably, Richard Marles remains as Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, continuing his prominent role in military expansion and alignment with US imperialist interests in the Indo-Pacific. Penny Wong stays as Foreign Minister, solidifying Australia's commitment to AUKUS and supporting the US against China. Jim Chalmers also remains Treasurer, signaling a continuation of austerity measures despite Labor's initial promises. However, the appointment of Stephen Jones as Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services represents a significant move. Jones, known for his close ties to the finance industry and advocacy for deregulation, will likely advance policies favorable to big business. Additionally, Clare O’Neil's extended responsibilities in Home Affairs and Cyber Security suggest a prioritization of national security concerns. Overall, the retained ministers indicate a commitment to existing militaristic and economically conservative policies, while new appointments hint at a further embrace of right-wing economic and security agendas. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/14/rdgs-m14.html
