The U.S. Space Force has awarded Northrop Grumman a $244 million contract to develop and demonstrate a prototype of the Meadowland Tracking, Relay, and Exploitation Augmentation (MeTREA) system. MeTREA aims to enhance the U.S. military's ability to track objects in geosynchronous orbit (GEO), a critical area for national security satellites. Currently, the Space Force faces challenges in maintaining persistent surveillance of GEO due to limitations in existing sensor systems. MeTREA will address this shortfall by providing improved tracking and data relay capabilities, enabling better monitoring of potential threats and ensuring the safety of U.S. assets in space. Northrop Grumman plans to leverage its existing technologies and expertise in space-based sensor systems to develop the MeTREA prototype. The project will involve designing, building, and testing advanced sensors and communication systems to achieve the desired performance improvements. The ultimate goal is to transition the MeTREA technology into operational use, significantly bolstering the Space Force's space domain awareness capabilities. The contract demonstrates the Space Force's commitment to investing in advanced technologies to maintain its strategic advantage in the increasingly contested space environment. find the original article here: https://www.yahoo.com/news/us-awards-244m-northrop-most-232029565.html
