Workers across South Asia and Australia are engaging in labor disputes over job security, fair wages, and austerity measures. In India, workers at the Mettur Thermal Power Station in Tamil Nadu are protesting for permanent employment, highlighting the precarious nature of contract work in the power sector. In Pakistan, steel workers in Karachi are demanding reinstatement after being laid off, reflecting broader economic challenges and privatization concerns within the steel industry. In Sri Lanka, public sector non-academic university workers are demonstrating against the government's austerity budget, which threatens their livelihoods and working conditions. Simultaneously, in South Australia, shipyard workers at BAE Systems have walked out to demand a pay raise commensurate with their contributions and the rising cost of living.
