Panama is experiencing widespread social unrest due to extreme inequality, poverty, and the perceived corruption of its political elite. Despite claims of an "economic miracle," a large portion of the population struggles with inadequate housing, healthcare, and education. This has led to strikes and protests, particularly among teachers and indigenous communities. A major point of contention is a contract granted to Minera Panama, a subsidiary of First Quantum Minerals, allowing it to continue operating a massive copper mine for 20 years. The deal has been criticized for its lack of transparency and the perception that it prioritizes foreign interests over the needs of Panamanian citizens. Concerns over environmental damage and insufficient royalties paid to the government have further fueled public anger. The protests, initially focused on the mining contract, have broadened to encompass broader grievances about the high cost of living, inadequate social services, and corruption within the government. The government's attempts to suppress the protests have been met with resistance, and the situation remains tense. The unrest reflects a deep-seated dissatisfaction with the country's economic and political system, highlighting the vast gap between the wealthy elite and the impoverished masses. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/07/ogri-m07.html
