A recent report highlights the troubling reality of child poverty under the current Labour government led by Sir Keir Starmer. Within just nine months, this administration has become the only Labour government on record to oversee an increase in child poverty. The report points to the government's adherence to austerity measures and its close alignment with capitalist interests as key drivers of this increase. Despite campaign promises to address inequality and improve living standards, the government has continued policies that disproportionately affect working-class families and vulnerable children. Specific government actions, such as cuts to social welfare programs and a reluctance to significantly raise minimum wages, have exacerbated the financial struggles of low-income households. The report further suggests that the government's economic priorities, favoring corporate interests over social spending, have directly contributed to the rising number of children living in poverty. This situation raises serious questions about the government's commitment to social justice and its ability to address the needs of the most vulnerable members of society. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/04/06/tenj-a06.html
