Workers at the Nestlé Purina pet food factory in South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania, initiated a strike action due to grievances concerning wages and hazardous working conditions. The strike, authorized by a significant majority of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) union Local 264 members, highlighted the workers’ dissatisfaction with Nestlé's proposed contract, which they deemed inadequate in addressing their key concerns. Workers cited stagnant wages that failed to keep pace with inflation, particularly impacting lower-paid employees. They also raised serious concerns about unsafe working conditions, including excessive dust exposure that could lead to respiratory illnesses, excessive heat, and a lack of proper safety measures. The union alleged that the company prioritized profits over worker safety. The strike follows similar labor disputes at other Nestlé Purina facilities across the United States, indicating a pattern of strained relations between the company and its workforce. The Pennsylvania strike is part of a broader wave of labor unrest across various industries, fueled by rising living costs and a growing awareness of workers' collective bargaining power. The workers aim to secure a fair contract that addresses their wage concerns and ensures a safe and healthy work environment. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/03/11/koct-m11.html
