In April 2025, a meeting at Wayne State University discussed the escalating dangers of a potential global war and the necessity for socialist solutions. The report highlighted the increasing military spending by major powers like the US, China, and Russia, driven by geopolitical tensions and the declining economic power of the United States. This arms race, coupled with proxy wars in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East, are pushing the world closer to a catastrophic conflict. The speaker emphasized the role of capitalism in fueling these conflicts, arguing that the inherent contradictions of the system – the drive for profit and control of resources – inevitably lead to war. The report pointed to the historical precedents of the two World Wars, also rooted in capitalist competition. It criticized the mainstream media and political establishment for downplaying the risks of war and promoting nationalist narratives. The analysis stressed the importance of building an international anti-war movement based on the working class. It argued that only through socialist revolution, abolishing the capitalist system and establishing a planned global economy, can the threat of war be permanently eliminated. The report concluded by calling on students and young people to join the International Youth and Students for Social Equality and to fight for a socialist future. The alternative, it warned, is a descent into barbarism and potentially nuclear annihilation. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/04/15/wewp-a15.html
