The Sri Lankan parliamentary elections saw a significant shift in political power, with the ruling JVP/NPP experiencing an electoral setback. However, the World Socialist Web Site argues that despite this apparent weakening, the JVP/NPP government will leverage the election results to intensify its implementation of IMF-dictated austerity measures. These measures, aimed at stabilizing the country's debt-ridden economy, are expected to exacerbate the already dire living conditions of the working class. The article predicts widespread job losses, reduced wages, and cuts to essential public services like healthcare and education. Furthermore, the WSWS suggests that the JVP/NPP will utilize the election outcome to justify suppressing the inevitable popular opposition that will arise in response to these austerity policies. This suppression could manifest in the form of increased surveillance, restrictions on freedom of assembly, and the use of force against protests and strikes. The underlying premise is that the ruling party, regardless of its electoral performance, remains committed to enforcing the IMF's agenda, even at the expense of social stability and democratic rights. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/10/xmfn-m10.html
