"Jean Charles," directed by Henrique Goldman, recreates the tragic killing of Jean Charles de Menezes by London police in 2005. Mistaken for a terrorist suspect in the aftermath of the 7/7 London bombings, the innocent Brazilian electrician was shot eight times in the head at Stockwell tube station. The film meticulously reconstructs the events leading up to De Menezes' death, beginning with the botched surveillance operation targeting Hussain Osman, one of the real bombers who had fled after a failed attack. The narrative focuses on the escalating paranoia and pressure within the police force, driven by political demands for visible action against terrorism. The film depicts the chaotic and poorly communicated operation as it unfolds, showcasing how a series of misidentifications and flawed decisions culminated in the fatal shooting. "Jean Charles" avoids sensationalism, instead portraying the events with a chilling realism. It emphasizes the human cost of the "war on terror," highlighting the dangerous consequences of fear-driven policing and the erosion of civil liberties. The drama gains further authenticity through the work of the filmmakers with the De Menezes family and a fine performance by Edison Alcaide in the title role. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/07/wjma-m07.html
