A recent report highlights a significant surge in global military spending, reaching levels unseen since the Cold War. In 2024, worldwide military expenditure experienced a substantial 9.4% increase, marking the most rapid acceleration in arms accumulation since 1988. This surge is attributed to a confluence of factors, notably the ongoing war in Ukraine and escalating geopolitical tensions across various regions. European countries have dramatically increased their military budgets, spurred by the conflict in Ukraine and fears of Russian aggression. The United States remains the world's largest military spender, allocating significant resources to maintaining its global military presence and supporting conflicts abroad. Other countries, including China and India, are also increasing their military capabilities, driven by regional rivalries and ambitions for greater global influence. The rearmament trend reflects a deepening crisis in the international system, characterized by a breakdown of diplomatic solutions and a growing reliance on military force to resolve disputes. This escalating arms race poses serious risks to global security, diverting resources away from essential social programs and increasing the likelihood of armed conflict. The report emphasizes that the rise in military spending is not solely a consequence of specific conflicts, but also a symptom of deeper underlying issues within the global capitalist system, including intensifying great-power competition. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/02/sjcg-m02.html
