In a *Meet the Press* interview, Donald Trump asserted that as president, he is not bound by the US Constitution. When challenged by host Kristen Welker about his prior statement that he would consider pardoning individuals convicted of violence on January 6th, Trump implied he could pardon them regardless of their actions, even potentially preemptively. He justified this by stating he believed those involved were "patriots" and "hostages." Welker repeatedly pressed Trump on whether he would commit to upholding the Constitution and ensuring a peaceful transfer of power. Trump avoided directly answering, instead focusing on his unsubstantiated claims of election fraud in 2020. He argued that the election was rigged and that the January 6th events were a consequence of this alleged fraud. He claimed that he would only uphold the Constitution if he thought it was being upheld. He accused the Democrats of cheating and stealing the election, leading him to believe that he was not obligated to uphold the constitution because they did not. Trump's stance suggests a belief that his personal assessment of the fairness of an election outcome supersedes his constitutional obligations. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/06/qfsz-m06.html
