A recent report by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) highlights the UK's deteriorating economic position relative to other European nations, particularly concerning living standards for the poorest households. The study, which examines household income and wealth across several European countries, reveals a significant decline in the UK's performance, especially in the aftermath of Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic. The report points to the UK's poor productivity growth and high inequality as major contributing factors to its declining position. Unlike many European nations, the UK has struggled to recover from the economic shocks of recent years, resulting in a persistent cost-of-living crisis. The NIESR study indicates that the poorest households in the UK are now worse off compared to their counterparts in countries like Slovenia and Malta, challenging the long-held perception of the UK as a wealthy nation. Furthermore, the report emphasizes the impact of government policies on exacerbating inequality. Austerity measures implemented after the 2008 financial crisis, coupled with the economic fallout from Brexit, have disproportionately affected low-income households. The report suggests that without significant policy changes aimed at boosting productivity and addressing inequality, the UK's economic performance will continue to lag behind its European neighbors, potentially leading to further declines in living standards for the most vulnerable populations. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/04/04/sebn-a04.html
