UPS Layoffs: Teamsters Silent

As UPS implements significant layoffs impacting thousands of workers, particularly targeting part-time employees and those in smaller facilities, the Teamsters union leadership is facing criticism for its response. Despite the company's claims of adapting to reduced package volume and automation, the layoffs are seen by many as a betrayal of promises made during recent contract negotiations. The contract, touted as a historic victory, included wage increases and new positions, but also contained provisions that are now facilitating the job cuts. The World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) criticizes the Teamsters bureaucracy for allegedly prioritizing its relationship with UPS over the interests of rank-and-file workers. They point to the union's failure to mobilize members against the layoffs and accuse the leadership of deliberately concealing the extent of the job losses. Furthermore, the WSWS highlights the Teamsters' promotion of newly confirmed Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican with a conservative record, as further evidence of the union's alignment with pro-corporate forces. The WSWS argues that the Teamsters are failing to adequately defend workers' jobs and are instead collaborating with the company and the political establishment. They advocate for a rank-and-file rebellion to challenge the current leadership and fight against the layoffs. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/03/11/bysk-m11.html
