On May 3, 2024, Columbia University students and faculty held a “Popular University for Gaza” event, defying the administration's attempts to suppress protests against the ongoing Israeli military assault in Gaza. The event featured lectures, teach-ins, and cultural performances, aiming to educate and mobilize support for Palestine. Speakers included professors and activists discussing the history of the conflict, the role of imperialism, and the current humanitarian crisis. The event was a direct response to the university’s crackdown on pro-Palestine demonstrations, including suspensions and eviction notices. The organizers sought to create a space for open discussion and dissent, highlighting the university's complicity in Israeli policies through investments and research. The atmosphere was described as determined and defiant, with participants expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemning the US government's support for Israel. The university administration responded by warning students of disciplinary action for further demonstrations. Despite these threats, the “Popular University for Gaza” proceeded as planned, drawing hundreds of participants. The event emphasized the connection between the struggle for Palestinian liberation and broader movements for social justice, including anti-imperialism and anti-capitalism. Artists and activists also participated, creating a mural and holding workshops to raise awareness and inspire action. The event concluded with a call for continued resistance and solidarity. find the original article here: https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2025/05/04/eknv-m04.html
